APC Accuses Akpabio Of Planning To Sabotage Buhari's Anti Corruption Campaign

The Akwa Ibom state chapter of the All Progressives Congress has accused the senate minority leader and former governor of the state, Godswill Akpabio, of planning to stop President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war.

Speaking on behalf of the party in Uyo, the state capital, the party’s publicity secretary in the state, Ita Awak, said Akpabio was trying to use the Peoples Democratic Party’s senate caucus to truncate Buhari’s efforts at curbing and fighting corruption in Nigeria.

The party frowned at Akpabio’s recent statement where he opined that the current war against corruption lacked transparency and fairness to all, as Buhari seem to be targeting his political opponents.

According to Punch, Awak further accused Akpabio of profiting from high-level corruption, saying he would soon be exposed by Buhari’s anti-corruption campaign.

He said, “We, therefore, recall that some very powerful forces and influential personalities in our country sponsored the palace coup that ousted the military regime of the then Major General Muhammadu Buhari and truncated our national renaissance against corruption in 1985.

“It is, therefore, very worrisome to us that the current war that the APC government of President Buhari has begun in 2015 may suffer a grave setback unless the dark agents of corruption who have held sway, especially in the last eight years, are contained and brought to justice.

“With Akpabio’s false allegations that the current war against corruption lacks transparency, fairness to all and appears to be aimed at political adversaries, we are troubled that Akpabio is strategically using his present position as the Minority Leader to galvanise that segment of the powerful elite in our country who are determined to ensure that the Buhari’s war against corruption fails.”

Buhari recently responded to the accusations that his government is leading a selective war against corruption. Reacting to the PDP senate caucus claims through his media aide Garba Shehu, he described their comments as “false, baseless and totally unjustifiable”.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had also reacted to the allegations, saying the probe is not about probing the past government, but about ensuring stable, corruption-free future for Nigerians.


Last week, the senate PDP Caucus had also urged Buhari to intervene in the affairs of the Department of State Services adding that the activities of the DSS was mostly centred in Abia, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, instead of focusing on the insurgency taking place in the North East region of the country.
