Reports have emerged indicating that a group supporting Senator Ahmed Lawan are intending to strip the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, of their positions in the Nigerian Senate.

The group loyal to Senator Lawan, according to Vanguard, allegedly plan to“instigate the arrest of Saraki and Ekweremadu on spurious allegations or harass the Senate President to the point of yielding to the removal of his deputy at the plenary of the upper chamber”.
Senator Lawan was one of the favourites of the APC in the race for the Senate presidency. The appointment of Saraki and Ekweremadu continues to generate controversy, including the latest news of them being elected based on forged documents.
Moreover, last week’s invitation extended by the EFCC to Saraki’s wife, Toyin Saraki, over corruption allegations, has been named by sources as President Muhammadu Buhari’s involvement in the impeachment plot. Vanguard’s sources maintain President Buhari is seen as a tool to getting government’s support to use the state apparatus, including the EFCC, the DSS and the police, against the Senate president.
However, Senator Joseph Waku of the APC, the leader of Arewa Consultative Forum, stated it was Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu behind the petition to the EFCC to probe Saraki’s wife.
